The faculty have expertise in a variety of areas including biotechnology, neuro pharmacology, cancer research, genetic engineering, biophysics, molecular modeling, nanotechnology and biomaterials science. Clarkson faculty are noted for their research; however, their primary mission is undergraduate education. Students in the Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Program are encouraged to participate in faculty-directed research projects as early as their sophomore year. They learn how to ask key questions, interpret data and find answers.

Chemistry is the science that deals with the properties, composition and structure of matter; with the changes that occur in matter; and with the energy relationships involved in these changes. These are essential for modern technology and the chemistry program at Clarkson is strongly related to the advanced technical development in key industries.  One of the most rapidly expanding and developing areas of science today is right at the interface of the chemical and biological sciences. To provide the essential training for careers in biotechnology and the medical and pharmaceutical industries, in molecular biology, forensics or genetic engineering, Clarkson has established a new B.S. program in Biomolecular Science.  This program extends across several academic areas. 

Faculty in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science are recognized leaders for their collaborations across disciplines with other scientists and engineers to solve complex problems. Their critical mass in Clarkson's key research centers bring the institution world renown and foster strong corporate connections.  They demonstrate expertise in a variety of areas including biotechnology, neuro pharmacology, cancer research, genetic engineering, biophysics, molecular modeling, nanotechnology and biomaterials science. They are extremely active, producing among them approximately 67 publications and patents per year. Their research is supported by external grants in excess of $2.4 million annually. The faculty also presents some 100 to 150 talks annually at other universities, national and international meetings. They serve as editors of major journals, members of editorial or advisory boards, and officers of professional organizations and societies. National and international recognition is reflected by four American Chemical Society awards in colloid and surface science as well as awards in analytical chemistry and electrochemistry.

In addition to a bachelor's degree, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. programs with concentrations in analytical, biochemical, physical (theoretical), organic, and inorganic, as well as environmental, colloid and surface chemistry. In addition, a cooperative program with the W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center at Lake Placid, N.Y., offers a chemistry program with a biochemistry emphasis.

The curriculum is rigorous and includes core courses in analytical, organic and physical chemistry as well as cell biology, genetics and molecular biology. The program concludes with a two-semester, senior-level capstone course in biochemistry, supplemented by intensive labs in molecular biology and biotechnology.
